life by the sea
Connected, Welcoming, and Rooted in Community
We acknowledge that we are on the traditional lands of the Wasoqopa’q First Nation (pronounced Was-oh-goh-pahq), part of Mi’kma’ki (pronounced Meeg-ma-gee), the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This land is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship,” first signed between the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkati Peoples and the British Crown in the 1700s. These treaties did not involve the surrender of land and remain living agreements that continue to guide our relationships today. We are all Treaty people.
With this in mind, the story of the Yarmouth Region is deeply rooted in connection; to the land, to the sea, and to the many peoples who have called it home. From its days as a bustling port where traders from the United States once bartered goods, to the time when Acadian settlers, supported by the region’s Indigenous peoples-whose ancestral home our region is, guided others to build their communities here. Yarmouth has always been a place shaped by collaboration and diversity. Today, that same spirit continues in its welcoming fishing harbours, family-friendly neighbourhoods, and thriving schools, inviting physicians to practice medicine where work-life balance isn’t just a promise, but a way of life.”
